The Gamification of Math Classrooms

Session E | 11:05 – 11:25 | Room 204

Abstract:

I am investigating the use of games as tools for teaching and review of concepts in the classroom. After using several review games in my classroom I was concerned that some students seemed to be dominating during the games and others would let themselves fade into the background. The inequality of responses caused me to try and develop new methods which would allow all students to participate equally. I tested a number of different adaptations of several common games used in the classroom and developed my own versions which endeavor to allow all students to be engaged and learning at the same time. This is especially relevant to new educators who are looking for practical tools that they can take into their own classrooms and to practicing teachers who are looking to expand their repertoire of classroom techniques for engaging and teaching students!
