We all know that educational research must inform our practices as educators. But how exactly do we incorporate a 32-page quantitative study on improving children’s literacy into our classrooms? Or an entire book on how to maintain student engagement in reading?

Through a visual diagram, I will show my step-by-step process in incorporating the following literature into my classroom:
– I Read It, but I Don’t Get It by Chris Tovani
– Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? by Chris Tovani
– Create Captivating Classes: Why NCLB Should Mean No Child Left Bored by Christopher Bontjes
– “‘To Open Our Minds More Freely’: Educational Drama and the Common Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts” by Linda Lang.

My diagram will have three parts: extracts from the above literature, highlighted sections from my unit plans, and a series of pictures of classroom activities and student work. Using string and thumbtacks, I will physically show the connections between my initial research, creation of unit plans that incorporate this research, and ultimate result of using these research practices in my classroom.

Audiences, regardless of teachable subject, will gain a number of tools to engage students in the reading of a text whether that be a science textbook or a short play. It is my intention show manageable ways to adapt an array of educational research for our students and classrooms. Using research to inform our practices does not have to be a daunting task. Let me show you how!
