Becoming Educator in the World

Presentation by:  Jacky Barreiro, Poh Tan

Session: Session C | Time: 11:00AM – 11:20AM | Location: Room 202

Diverging from Cartesian dichotomies and moving towards a relational and performative understanding of the world, the world never is, but becomes. It is in a process of continuous becoming, performing its relational ontology anew in each turn. Within this understanding, a teacher never ‘is’, but becomes a teacher in the intra-action (Barad, 2007) of the teaching event. In this sense, in the embodied practice of teaching, the teacher is not just a part, but is also herself an assemblage of human and non-human components in the enactment of teaching. In this presentation we discuss the Hula dance experiences of a science teacher which are not simply carried or transferred into her teaching but are actually component-affective-intensities of becoming teacher in teaching. We will discuss how self-study research methodology (S-STEP) helped raise awareness of a gap between knowledge and the object of knowledge through the performativity of dance and teaching science.
