Trauma Sensitive Practice in Education

Presentation by:  Christina Pulice-Smith, Gurjeevan Gill

Session: A | Time: 9:00 AM-9:40 AM | Location: Room 208

There is growing concern of the number of youth struggling with their mental wellbeing within our communities, and the lack of timely and accessible support services available. This gap of services often falls upon our school systems who may not be well equipped to provide the necessary supports. As a result, students and teachers alike struggle with moving youth forward academically and personally. Our goal is to enhance teacher practice and school engagement for our students. In our discussion, we will explore the relationship of social/emotional learning and mental health by examining the effect of using trauma-informed practices. We will introduce the use of ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores and the self reflection of educators and students to showcase possibilities to guide our approach with youth.
