The Power of Yet: Developing the Growth Mindset through Meaningful Feedback in a Primary Classroom

Presentation by:  Andrea Page

Session: E | Time: 11:05AM – 11:45AM | Location: Room 203

This presentation reflects Social Emotional Learning and how it is integrated into the classroom through academics and reflection. The presentation will begin by exploring what the growth mindset is (fixed mindset vs. growth mindset). Then, look at some of Carol Dweck’s research that explains what the growth mindset is and share an example of how it is demonstrated. Next, a practical application of what this can look like in a classroom. I will share what I have done in Kindergarten to set goals and how to follow through with them so that it is student-driven, with teacher support where appropriate. In addition, this will connect to the Core Competencies and how reflection and goal setting can work – regardless of age. Real world examples will be shared where I will show what students have said and done in my own classroom. Lastly, the parent connection and the importance of how all three – teacher, student and parent – play a huge role in the success of the child. This ties in the importance of the a relationship, the ability to show students that with practice and persistence they can learn to get better at what they are hoping to work on – they are just not there YET, and how the relationship between students, parents, and teachers play a critical role in the success of any child at school. This is relevant to teachers today as these soft skills are what will that allow the students to be lifelong learners, and we, as teachers, have the potential to play a large role in the development of that.
