Abstract:

I am a current UBC Education Teacher Candidate in the Elementary Years International Baccalaureate Cohort. We have been working on personal inquiry projects over the past two semesters. My question “How can assessment promote self-directed learning?” has been explored through research in literature as well as experience in my Grade 2 practicum classroom. I plan to implement a variety of visible thinking strategies in order to promote process over product based assessment. I will also create a variety of self-assessment resources including single-point rubrics suitable for an elementary classroom. For the conference, I would like to create a poster that effectively and creatively summarizes my key take away points. My key resources have been Ron Ritchhart’s “Culture of Thinking” and “Making Thinking Visible”, as well as Carol Dweck’s “Mindset”. My goal for the conference would be to provide a list of tangible resources and strategies for teachers. I will also have examples of activities used in my practicum class to share with teachers and teacher candidates.
