Presentation by:  Darcie-Anne Bailey

Session F | 11:50 – 12:10 | Room 204A

Abstract:

Graduating from high school is a time of transition for all students. This transition can be especially difficult for individuals who have special needs. A discussion will take place that explores the post-secondary adjustment for individuals with special needs after graduating from high school.

A number of topics will be discussed:

What does the typical transition for individuals with special needs look like? What are some of the key challenges that are faced? How can we work to make this transition easier for people with special needs?

The discussion will also focus on current transitional programs that work to promote independent living. One program that will be discussed in particular is called Gaining Resources Our Way (G.R.O.W.). G.R.O.W. is a program that uses evidence based techniques to better assist individuals with special needs to learn the skills to one day live independently. It seeks to integrate all individuals into the community through vocational, social skill, and life skill training.
