Journaling as Curation

Presentation by:  David Barnum

Session: Session A | Time: 9:00 AM – 9:20 AM | Location: Room 200

Place-based learning expectations are woven through the curriculum but what could this look like in more urban settings? What if, instead of opening doors to the classroom, students walked into a local museum, City Hall, an art gallery, a university hub, a recreation centre or an outdoor space? This marks the beginning to a week of learning in the community, alongside experts and staff of local organizations and agencies, working collaboratively with the teacher to create powerful learning experiences: Rethinking Learning Environments: Community as Classroom | David Barnum | TEDxLangleyED. This framework embodies innovative learning environment principles promoted by the OECD, providing a concrete way for teachers to explore learning in the community: Open Minds: Constructing Learning in the Community, via TEL Journal. We will explore current sites and look at next steps for supporting teachers as they move learning into local communities: Wrapping up the Classroom in Residence pilot project, Chilliwack Museum & Archives.
